The Chemistry Department at Pacific
The Chemistry Department is housed in a selective, private undergraduate liberal arts college and consists of five faculty members and two part-time stockroom assistants. We graduate approximately 5-10 seniors each year. Many of our students go on to pursue graduate degrees in chemistry or professional programs in the health sciences. We are proud of our interest and commitment to teaching and believe in a strong role for all types of undergraduate research in the development of our students.
As the College of Arts and Sciences increases enrollment, we expect that the Chemistry Department will continue to grow.
TITLE: LABORATORY COORDINATOR, CHEMISTRY
The Chemistry Department at Pacific University seeks a laboratory coordinator in chemistry.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION: This individual will serve to support the academic laboratory instruction in the chemistry program. It is a full time position during the academic year (Aug 4-December 19, January 19-May 31) for a total of 0.75 FTE. The salary range is $15.00/hr to $18.00/hr depending on experience).
RESPONSIBILITIES:
o Set-up and teardown for general chemistry and organic chemistry laboratories including:
o Inventory equipment and reagents and ensure sufficient supplies are on hand.
o Prepare and analyze any necessary solutions.
o Set-up and trouble shoot the experiment prior to lab.
o Clean-up after the laboratory including proper disposal of chemical waste in a timely manner.
o Maintain prep sheets and SOP's.
o Help manage the department's stockroom and its computerized equipment inventory.
o Monitor the chemistry department's major instrumentation and computers and perform routine maintenance and training.
o Monitor teaching laboratory equipment and maintain as needed.
o Perform small equipment maintenance in the department as needed.
o Coordinate with Chemistry Resource Manager to manage student workers who will clean and maintain the laboratories and stockroom.
o Support work for Chemistry Resource Manager as needed
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
o Bachelor's degree in chemistry/biochemistry or a bachelor's degree in a laboratory science with appropriate experience.
o Comfortable using chemical instrumentation and computers.
o Effective oral and written communications skills.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Position works in laboratory and stock room environment and has frequent exposure to chemicals.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: Reports to the Department Chair
